Mocke and Eray Win inaugural Pennypinchers Easter Surf Ski Challenge supported by PPC Cement
The keenly anticipated Pennypinchers Easter Surfski Challenge supported by PPC Cement, which forms part of the four day Plett Easter Games 2011 sports festival proved to be a hotly contested affair with Jasper Mocke (Fishhoek, Cape Town) taking the inaugural race honours in the men’s division and top SA female paddler Michelle Eray (Plett) taking the top spot in the women’s division ahead of Olympic Canoeist and multiple SA Surfski champion Nikki Mocke (Cape Town). Jasper and his brother Dawid also went on to win the doubles Surfski race in fine form at the weekend.
Jasper Mocke one of SA’s top Surfski paddlers and consistent top five Surfski World Cup finishers said “it was the best lap course layout that I have ever raced” and managed to hold off the challenge from Tom Schilperoort to finish ahead in the end. Sean Rice who had to also overcome serious rudder difficulties also raced incredibly well to finish in third place.
The 120 paddler’s that took part in the singles race were treated to calm seas with light winds during the four lap, 20km course with several river crossings and downwind sections, which provided for some outstanding racing and Surfski paddling conditions.
“The Plett Easter Games is a great sporting festival and one of the highlights on the Plett calendar. To have the Pennypinchers Easter Surfski Challenge form part of the activities is awesome and we’re really pleased with the brilliant turn out of paddlers from all over South Africa” said Wayne Craig from Offthehook Events, organizers of the Pennypinchers Easter Surfski Challenge supported by PPC Cement.
