The Cape Fur Seal

May 17, 2011 by Victoria Rowe No Comment

Message from our whale companies: South Africa has one species of seal endemic to its coastline – the Cape (African) Fur Seal

They spend much of their life at sea, feeding mainly on pelagic fish as well as octopus, squid and swimming prawns

They have a dog-like head with a prominent snout and coarse protruding whiskers

Their ears are short, tubular and hairless, pointed at the tips

The maximum weight of the female is 100kg and the male, 350kg
