What does Bafana Bafana mean?

June 22, 2010 by Victoria Rowe 2 Comments

Bafana Bafana, is a Zulu world that means boys boys and was coined by three Sowetan sports reporters in 1992. It has an endearment meaning. As regards to the use in the national team, some South Africans growing up in the townships with elders like fathers, uncles and brothers would owned soccer teams. Because most players would be younger than the owners, it was common for them to say – “abafana bam ba dlala kahle” (translated – my boys are playing well). It was a sign of appreciation of how the team was playing and the word “bafana” did not have any negative connotation.
